*Hop, step and jump in USA (8) - Las Vegas*
Las Vegas is short for casinos and hotels. All hotels have casinos. The big hotels are elaborately decorated on certain themes.
The theme of decoration of the New York New York Hotel is of course about the city of New York: showing the New York skyline, the Central Park, the Times Square and the Statue of Liberty.
The next 4 photos showcase the themed exterior of 2 other hotels. The Luxor follows the theme of ancient Egyptian civilisation while the Mandalay follows that of Myanmar.
The Bellagio Hotel is famous for its dancing fountains and the Conservatory. All the posting on this hotel are interior shots at the Conservatory. The current decoration is "Spring in Japan" featuring a samurai and the Osaka Castle replica. The last photo is on the permanant ceiling which is not Japanese but Chihuly (remember him: the Chihuly Garden in Seattle?)

*Hop, step and jump in USA (9) - Las Vegas*
Today we attended a midday mass at the Guardian Angel Cathedral in Las Vegas. It was first built in 1963 with a simple A-frame structure, adorned with large pieces of stained glasses. Capacity: 1,100.
Continuing our tour of hotels with interesting features. First the Treasure Island Hotel featuring a huge pirate ship. Then the Mirage which features a huge garden in front of the hotel and an atrium at the reception with big palm trees.
A huge (3.900+ rooms) and upscale hotel here is Cesears Palace featuring people and structure of the Roman era. 2 shots at the reception area and 2 more exterior shots.
The 11th photo is Resorts World Las Vegas now under construction. Due for opening in late 2020. The last photo is the Wynn Hotel. Does the Resorts World hotel look like the Wynn's? The Wynn people thought so and they sued Resorts World in late 2018 for intentionally making Resorts World's buildings look like Wynn's.

Cesears Palace

*Hop, step and jump in USA (10) - Antelope Canyon*
Today we take another day trip by bus from Las Vegas to the Antelope Canyon in the state of Arizona. It is about 450 km away from Las Vegas. The journey took near to 5 hours either way, passing through the state of Utah.
Near the Canyon is the Horseshoe Bend where the mighty Colorado River makes a reverse meander. The valley is about 300 m from the viewing rim. Spectacular landform, 1st 3 photos.
Had a photo-stop at the Glen Canyon Dam over the Colorado River, 4th photo, the 2nd largest dam in the state after the Hoover Dam we saw a few days ago.
The Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon caused by erosion of the sandstone formation. Flooding and wind are the principal agents of erosion. The rock faces show spectacular shades of colour due to the difference in light intensity reflected onto the rock, as well as whimsical shape framed by the rocks.
We visited the Lower Antelope Canyon. The entry down to the canyon is through several flights of metal stairs shown in the 5th photo and the exit is via a narrow passage shown in the last photo. Visitors were divided into groups of 10 each led by a local guide. The walk on the canyon floor lasted slightly over an hour. Walk mostly in single file. Simply too many tourists. No time to really admire the structures except snapping photos here and there. The guide was constantly uttering "go go" to coax his herd to move on faster. A great show of Nature.

*Hop, step and jump in USA (11) - Las Vegas - San Antonio*
Early this afternoon we left Las Vegas and flew to San Antonio in the state of Texas. Flying time about 2 and a half hours.
A few more things about Las Vegas.
Las Vegas is about gambling. All the hotels have casinos. Slot machines are most conspicuous. First 2 photos. Bets as little as 1 cent playable. Business might not too good, many unoccupied machines everywhere.
Las Vegas is about sex. Big advertising boards on moving trucks "patrolled" the roads. Call girls, call men too. No sexual discrimination.
Las Vegas is about shows. The entertainment production house Cirque du Soleil, largest in the World, has several shows here. Celine Dion is currently performing in Caesars Palace, average ticket price about RM 1,400.
Las Vegas is about shopping. It was crowded at the North Premium Outlet which we went twice. But shopping streets within the top hotels for exclusive brands are rather empty. 7th and 8th photos.
Las Vegas is about living in the night. No night life story to tell but 2 photos on lighted night scenes.
And lastly Las Vegas is about high cost for tourists. A 1-day monorail pass costs RM 55, a 1-day bus pass costs RM 34. A plate of mixed rice at the North Premium Outlet cost RM 72 but at least the portion is nearly enough for 2. Nevertheless there are still many tourists coming to this Sin City.

*Hop, step and jump in USA (12) - San Antonio*
San Antonio is the oldest city in the state of Texas. Was founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718. The founders were 56 Canary Islanders who took a year to migrate here. Shown the Founders Monument and statue of St Anthony of Padua whom the city is named after. 1st 2 photos.
Attended a Sunday morning mass at the San Fernando Cathedral, first built in 1750, and rebuilt in 1868.
The population of San Antonio is about 1.5 millions. About 63% have Spanish blood. 5th and 6th photos show scene at the Spanish style Market Square (where our hotel is located).
Th biggest tourist attraction is the Alamo at the Alamo Square. It was initially a Catholic mission established by the missionaries but later the Spanish army took over. Then the place was taken over by the Texan Army after the Spanish withdrew. In 1836, the Mexican Army retook the place in the Battle of the Alamo. The 300 strong Texan Army was decimated by the 1500 strong Mexicans.
What remains today is the church of the old fortress and some ruins here and there. Shown the facade, the garden and the memorial of the casualty of the Texans. No photography is allowed inside the church.
Surounding the Alamo Square are shops, horse carts for tourists and entertainment arenas like a wax museum.

*Hop, step and jump in USA (13) - Austin*
Today we took a bus trip to Austin, some 130 km away or 80 minutes in journey time. Austin is the capital of the state of Texas. We visited only the campus of the University of Texas at Austin (UT in short) and the State Capital Grounds.
This trip is a nostalgia. In 1981/2 we lived in Austin for 17 months. I was on a government scholarship to do a Master of Science (Civil Engineering) degree at UT.
UT is a big school, present enrollment around 50,000. After 37 years of course I could recognised very few buildings.
The first two photos show the new academic buildings and the old admin office, called the Texas Tower. The 3rd one is a new sculpture at the Biology Department while the 4th shows the same old idyllic campus atmosphere.
The building behind me in the 5th photo is the ECJ building, where most of my graduate classes were held. UT is currently ranked the 5th best civil engineering graduate college in the USA. The famous MIT is only 7th. The 6th photo shows the Texas Memorial Stadium; capacity: 100,119 and ranked in the top 10 biggest stadiums in the World. UT is a college power house in sports. The current most recognisable sportsmen are Kevin Durant in basketball and Jordan Speith in golf. The college is traditionally strong in swimming with students winning more than 50 Olympic swimming golds over the years, one of them by the Singaporean Joseph Schooling.
The Capital Building is the seat of the state government, with the legislature and governor's office, etc. It was built in 1888. The dome is 3.5 m higher than the dome of the National Capital in Washington DC. Shown also the interior of the dome.
The next 2 groups of sculptures are to honour the Mexican Americans and the African Americans in contribution to the state.
The last two photos show the same setting in front of the statue of the Ranger. One was taken on 3 June 2019 and the other a winter day near year-end in 1981. The exact angle of shooting could not be repeated as the branches have grown to obstruct the view from the old location.
The old photo is a scanned copy from a print. Made before leaving Malaysia and planned for the story.

*Hop, step and jump in USA (14) - San Antonio /conclusion*
Went to the Briscoe Western Art Museum, western as in "country and western". A good collection of sculptures and paintings on things, events, related to the wild wild west. First 4 photos.
Attended a mid day mass at St Mary's Catholic Church, erected in 1924 to replace an older version. A beautiful church with beautiful stained glasses.
One major attraction in San Antonio is the River Walk, a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio river. The walk is lined with restaurants, shops, parks etc. The initial 4 km of the walkway was completed in 1946. Since then the walkways have extended to over 20 km. An open barge cruise along the waterways is a parallel activity of the walk. We had lunch at the Casa Rio Mexican Restaurant, the first restaurant opened along the River Walk in 1946. We took the 35-40 minute cruise too.
The San Antonio Missions are a collection of 5 Catholic missions started by the Spanish in the early 1700s. The old buildings, some in partial ruins, form a large collection of Spanish colonial architecture. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I visited the missions at Concepción, St Jose and St Juan.
*Conclusion* - our "hop step jump" tour of USA is thus completed. We are going home tomorrow. Thanks for your virtual companionship.
