South America 2019 - Part 11 - 17 (Finale)

*Whirlwind tour of South America (11)*

Today we visited the Perito Moreno Glacier, within the Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This large glacier is one of the 48 glaciers within the Southern Patagonia Ice Field. The ice field is the 3rd largest in the World, after the North and South Pole fields.

We walked on metal decks to admire the gracier from a distance. 1st photo shows general view, 3rd a close up. The width of the terminus is 5 km and average height 74 m, like an 8-storey  building. Look small in the photo.

We were supposed to take a boat ride to get near the glacier. However the boat was out of service. Another possible activity here is canoeing, but only for the ang moh.

*Correction 更正*

The glacier should be as tall as a 25 storey building, not 8 storey.

Another travelling day, 6 hour bus ride from El Calafate in Argentina to Puerto Natales in Chile. A small town and gateway to the Torres del Paine National Park.

We just roamed around this small town for a few hours. Nothing spectacular except some great seafront scenes including the Hand Monument. The last photo shows the Main Plaza, with the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians in the background. We attended a 7.00 pm Saturday evening mass here.

Whole day at Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

What to see? The vast Chilean steppes (photo 1), forests,  snow-capped peaks, rivers, blue lakes, glaciers, etc. At the valley of the Grey Lake (photo 2) first time experiencing hurricane-like strong wind. Great vista everywhere.

Another travelling day (whirlwind tour mah), bus from Puerto Natalis to Punta Arenas, 2+ hours, flew to Santiago, 3 hours.

Reached Santiago, capital of Chile, in late afternoon. Roamed around the Main Square. Shown people playing chess at the square and fortune teller booths, about 20 of them. Business very poor.

And 2 more photos taken yesterday at the scenic Torres del Paine National Park.

*Whirlwind tour of South America (15)*

Today we are visiting Valparaiso, a town 120 km north west of Santiago. It is famous for 2 things, classic funicular railway to the low hills, and street art or graffiti. The railcars are more than 100 years old. And graffiti is everywhere, the city self-claimed "the graffiti capital of South America".

The last photo shows the Neptune Terrace at the Santa Lucia Hill in Santiago. A public park and oasis in the city.

Today we are going home, flying from Santiago to KL with a long 8-hour transit stop in Amsterdam. So we took the opportunity and went to Kuekenhof for a few hours to admire the tulips. Kuekenhof is a famous garden, one of the largest in the World, particularly famous for tulips. Every year 7 million buds are planted in autumn to bloom in spring.

The tulips are not in full bloom yet, but we could smell the fragrance of spring. Had to have 2x4 photos today to showcase the tulips. However the 4th photo shows  hyacinths and not tulips.

*Whirlwind tour of South America (Finale)*

We are back to KL on the early evening of 29/3/2019. The whirlwind tour is completed and the story ended.  The tour in fact totals 20 days, a few days lost in the long flights and transits.

There are 19 of us, mostly seniors. The tour operator is YonGo Travel (www.yongo.biz). Thanks to Rachel our tour leader and fellow travellers for a great tour.  And thanks to the readers out there for your company in this virtual tour. Hope you too enjoy the tour like us.

All photos are mine except the group photo below. And 3 more photos of flowers taken at Kuekenhof yesterday.

Bye and see you on the next tour.
