Yading Nature Reserve, the Shangri-La in Xichuan, China
Shangri-La is a paradise described in the 1933 English novel“Lost Horizon”, the place loosely based on an article about this region in China published in the National Geographic a few years earlier. In order to promote tourism, several places in southwest China have changed their names to Shangri-La in recent years. In Daocheng County in Sichuan Province, a village formerly known as Riwa has been renamed Shangri-La Town. In 2015, we went to visit the Yading Nature Reserve located within the Shangri-La township.
Yading Nature Reserve is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, covering an area of 1,340 sq km. It is very large and has countless attractions. We only covered a few attractions during our day trip. The longest stay was around the grassland called Luorong Pasture. There are forests, streams, waterfalls, meadows, lakes, and sand bars, etc, with snow peaks and glaciers in the distance. The leaves have turned orange-yellow, signifying autumn is here.
Other attractions are a highland lake and an ancient Tibetan temple.
