Canada 2019 - Part 1 - 8

*Seeing refreshing Canada - (1)*

We, 2 couples, came to Vancouver, Canada on 5/5/2019. Today, 6/5/2019, is our 1st day of tour. We visited the downtown, the harbour area and had a glimpse of Stanley Park.

Vancouver has a city population of 650,000. 30% of the population in the inner city is Chinese, making it the largest ethnic group.

The harbour area - a squadron of seaplanes and flowers in bloom at the Devonian Harbour Park including the strange wood spurge, or Euphorbia Amygdaloides.

Stanley Park - the big forested park at the sea front and the top attraction in Vancouver, with marples among the firs and cedars, and the iconic totem poles.

Gastown - the oldest part of the city with brick buildings restored to the Victorian era, cast iron lamps, and the whistling Steam Clock.

Chinatown - the Dr Sun Yet-Sen Classical Chinese Garden,  with the purple azalea in bloom.

The last photo is a strange monument near the Telus Science Museum.

*Seeing refreshing Canada - (2) Vancouver*

Today we visited Capilano and Granville Island. Capilano is a forest park. The main attractions include the 147 m long suspension walk-bridge, 70 m above the Capilano River,  the tree-top canopy walk with a serious of bridges, and the cliff-walk which is a cantilevered walkway jetting out from the cliff face.

The main trees in the park are Douglas Fir and Red Cedar. The 5th photo shows the smooth-bark Cedar and the rough-bark Fir. The 6th shows the tallest fir here, called Grandma Capilano, 76 m tall and 1,300 years old. Then a giant fir cone and all trees point towards heaven.

In the afternoon we were at the Granville Island, once an industrial estate, now a popular shopping area, with restaurants, etc. The island is shown in the foreground of the 9th photo. Here everything is brightly coloured: buildings, flowers (tulip), vegetables (capsicums) and pies.

*Seeing refreshing Canada - (3,4) Alaska Cruise*

More shots of the skyline of Vancouver city at the waterfront, and the Robson Square, an oasis on Robson Street, the premier shopping street.

By noon on 07/05/19 we boarded our cruise ship for the Alaska Cruise, named "Volendam" owned by the Holland America Lines. Boarding was at the Canada Place, a building designed to look like a sail boat, photos taken from 2 different sides.

Volendam is 8 stories high, with a guest capacity of 1,432 on double occupancy. We are on a standard cabin, well furnished and equipped, about 280 sq ft in size.

The 1st and 2nd days are cruising days, at speeds around 40 km an hour. We are on a so-called "Inside Passage" route, with the ship passing along a network of passages weaving through the islands off the Pacific northwest coast of North America. Shown typical scenery.

*Seeing refreshing Canada - (5) Alaska Cruise*

10/05/19, around 1pm the ship docked at Juneau, the capital city of the state of Alaska. Population only 32,000. The major industries are government service, tourism and fishing.

It is a gloomy, cloudy sun-less day with occasional light drizzles. We spent about 3+ hours in town.

First: more views of the journey before and near to port, the quay area of Juneau, the State Capital Building with a statue of the iconic brown bear, the St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church and a funny signboard at a bus stop. Then typical houses and roadside tulips in bloom.

We spent an hour at the State Museum; a mask meant for the shaman. Alaska is of course famous for the Alaskan King Crab, this single leg costs US$ 28 or around RM 116.

*Seeing refreshing Canada - (6) Alaska Cruise*

Today the ship docked at the town of Skagway with 1,000 residents. A town founded during the gold rush days; now a regular stop for cruise ships.

Scenes of Skagway: surrounded by mountains, remembering old times: railway snow blower and the centennial statues, main street with the jewelry and liquor stores and hotels. During the gold rush days the prostitutes advertised themselves at the 1st floor windows. Enacted here to advertise a show.

We also took up a half-day Yukoner coach tour, costing US$ 72.50 each, including tips to the driver cum tour guide.

The coach took us from Skagway along the White Pass route into British Columbia in Canada, reached the Yukon border and returned.

Shown scenes up to the White Pass Summit (873 m) near the Canadian border. It was snowing very slightly for a short while. "Old" snow did  cover most of the rough terrain.

*Seeing refreshing Canada - (7) Alaska Cruise*

Today is cruising day, around the region called Glacier Bay. The 4 photos are taken at the John Hopkins Inlet where the ship comes very close to land. A beautiful sunny day.

Our next photo show is a continuation of the scenery on the Yukoner Tour taken yesterday. The first few show the rugged terrain near the White Pass Summit. See the heavily glaciated gullies. Part of the Tutshi River is still frozen, now nearly summer. Near the Canadian/US border is Alaska's welcoming signboard.

Further north the route followed the long Tutsui Lake, until we reached the border with the State of Yukon. Less snow now as it is on lower elevation. We returned after reaching the point of the Yukon signboard.

*Seeing refreshing Canada - (8) Alaska Cruise*

Today the ship docked at Ketchikan, population 8,000, the southernmost town in Alaska. The name is said to mean "Thundering Wings of an Eagle", with a giant eagle statue at the waterfront. The neighbourhood is heavily forested, with nice houses on the slope.

It is a popular cruiseship stop. Today 4 are docked here. Shown the giant "Norwegian Joy" which could carry 3,883 passengers.

Downtown is a National Historic District. It is also a salmon center, the 9thphoto showing Ketchikan Creek, a salmon passageway.

We also visited the Totem Heritage Center, a treasurehouse of historic  and famous totems.
