A church and a mosque standing side by side in Beirut, Lebanon

*WS28 - a church and a mosque standing side by side in Beirut, Lebanon*

After reviewing the mosque-cathedral of Cordoba, we now look at a grand mosque and a cathedral standing tall side by side in the most tolerant way in the city of Beirut.

Beirut is the capital of Lebanon, a country with some 58% Muslims and 37% Christians. Beirut itself was about 50-50 in the Muslim-Christian population when we were there in 2010. It could be very different now due to the influx of refugees from the Syrian civil war. The Christians come in many sects, the Maronite Catholics being the largest group.

At the city center there are many churches of different denominations and many mosques.

A prominent church building is the Maronite Catholic Cathedral of St George built in 1894, first 3 photos. And the largest  mosque is the Mohammad Al Amin Mosque, built in 2008, 4th to 7th photos. A most beautiful mosque.

The cathedral and the grand mosque just stand tall side by side, no issue at all, last photo. Unthinkable in Malaysia.
