*WS13 - the fountains of Peterhof Palace, Peterhof, Russia*
Peterhof Palace is located at the town of Peterhof near St Petersburg. This is a series of palace buildings and gardens laid out on the order of Peter the Great (1672-1725), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We visited the palace in 2011 on our own. The Grand Cascade, in front of the palace building, is the showcase of fountains and statues, the most glamorous we have ever seen.
There are 64 fountains and 200+ golden statues. The masterpiece is the Samson Fountain (5th photo) where Samson is depicted tearing open the jaws of a lion, representing Russia's victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War. The water jet shoots up 20 m towards the sky. But the present statue is only a replica installed in 1947, the original looted by the Germans in WW2.
The fountains operate via gravity forces, thus no pumping is required.
