The hillslope churches of Gheralta, Ethiopia. ( re-post )

*WS 07 ( re-post ) - The hillslope churches of Gheralta, Ethiopia*

The Gheralta region in northern Ethiopia has a spectacular landscape of flat dry plains and towering stratified rock outcrops. It is best known for its 35+ old rock-hewn churches, some famous for their magnificent view and difficult ascent.

The Abreha We Atsbeha Church, one of best kept and largest, was built around 8th to 10th century. All the space inside the church is carved out from solid rock. The murals are dated to the 17th century. Shown also old ceremonial drums.

The Wukro Chirkos Church is semi monolithic. As seen from the 5th photo, the top part of the entrance portal and the bell tower are built-up parts.

The St George church is another one visited. The villagers were surprised by the yellow-skin visitors. The part-time priest showed us a 200+ year old manuscript.
