South America 2019 - Part 5 - 10

Whirlwind tour of South America - 5

We are now in Buenos Aires (meaning: good air), the biggest city and capital of Argentina.

First visited the La Recoleta Cemetary, the 1st public cemetery since 1732. The mausoleums are mostly massive and elaborate. Famous people buried here include Eva Peron (remember "Don't cry for me, Argentina"?).

The Paseo El Rosedal, a scenic park and sprawling rose garden. Then to the main square, visited the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires, a church first built in 1580 and restored many times since. The main Catholic Church in the city where Pope Francis was the archbishop here from 1998 to 2013.

And the Caminito Walkway, a street with brightly coloured buildings credited to a local resident Q Martin, who started to beautify the slum in the 1950’.  Now very touristic

Whirlwind tour of South America - 6

We spent the day in San Telmo, an old neighbourhood in the city center of Boenos Aires. The Sunday open-air flea market around Plaza Dorrego was established since 1970.

Many entertainers perform in and around the plaza to earn a living. The most popular ones are the tango dancersthe most hated  the pick pockets.

We had coffee at this iconic cafe called Bar Plaza Dorrego with classic decoration reminiscent of the early years of the 20th century.

We attended a Sunday mass at the Church of San Pedro Gonzalez Telmo, first built in 1734 and one of the oldest in the city. The bell towers are 40 m high.

Church of San Pedro Gonzalez Telmo

Whirlwind tour of South America - 7

Early morning we took a 3-hour local flight from Boenos Aires to Ushuaia, reputed as the southern most city in the World. Population: 60,000. And it is cold and windy, around 5 to 6 degrees most of the day. Shown the buildings against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. It is a port of call for cruise ships, like those to the Southern Antarctica.

In the afternoon some members took a cruise out to the coast. We didn't. We visited Museo del Fin del Mundo, a museum on natural history of Ushuaia and southern Patagonia. Shown penguin specimen.

On food, the southern king crab (lithodes santolla) is a must try in Ushuaia. This one cost about RM 175, certainly enough for 2 people. In KL it could cost double.

Whirlwind tour of South America - 8

Today is mostly spent at the Tierra del Fuego National Park near Ushuaia. The park was established in 1960, over 680 sq km covering mountains, lakes, waterfalls and glaciers.

Many trekking options are available. We chose an easy one, 5+ km, taking about 3 hours. Other members mostly on more difficult or longer treks. Shown typical scenes, and an indigenous Magellan goose. The biker is from Rio, Brazil and he has ridden 8,000 km to come here.

Whirlwind tour of South America - 9

Today is travelling day,  first flew from Ushuaia to El Calafate, 1+ hour with Aerolineas Argentinas, unfamiliar name to us.

From El Calafate we took a bus to El Chalten, 220 km away. Shown highway scene near the small town, called the Trekking Capital of Argentina. We go trekking tomorrow.

No sightseeing today so no photo to show. To comply with my self-imposed rule of 4 photos a day, I present here two shots of endemic parasitic plants taken at the Tierra del Fuego National Park yesterday. The 1st one the orange ball-like  "misodendrum punctulatum", the 2nd white "thread-like" nick-named "Chinese lantern".

Whirlwind tour of South America - 10

Today is trekking day. El Chalten is a small town crowned the Trekking Capital of Argentina. Most tourists come here to trek and there are many established treks.

We the less fit went to the initial parts of 2 separate treks, covering some 11 km. Great vista through out. The 3rd photo shows the Valley of Vueltas and the 4th photo shows the peaks of Torres, Egger, etc. as viewed from the Torres Viewpoint.

Most of the other members took more difficult and longer treksover 20 km at least.
