The Naqsh-e Jahan Square in the city of Isfahan, Iran

*MS38 - the Naqsh-e Jahan Square in the city of Isfahan, Iran*

Isfahan, located in central Iran and with 2 million people, is a former Persian capital. The city center is dominated by the giant Naqsh-e Jahan Square built in the early 16th century. The name means "Square of the Image of the World". It is some 510 m by 158 m in size.

The square is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is bordered by 2-storied arcades which serve as the Grand Bazaar, a palace and 2 mosques.

The 3rd photo shows part of the bazaar, and the 4th photo shows a popular tea house where old pots and pans and lamp shades and everything else are hung from the ceiling. The 5th photo shows student groups at the square.

The 6th photo shows the 6-storey Ali Qapu Palace. It  was not a full palace, but one used more for reception and entertainment by the king.

The Shah Mosque was constructed in the early 17th century. The splendour is mainly due to the beauty of its seven-colour mosaic tiles and calligraphic inscriptions. Half a million pieces of tiles were used.

We visited Iran in 2018.
