The ruins of Machu Picchu, Peru (re-post)

 *WS 02 ( re-post ) – The ruins of Machu Picchu, Peru*

Machu Picchu is an Inca settlement in central-south Peru built around 1450, on a mountain ridge about 2,430 m high. It was abandoned 100 years later when the Spanish came. The Spanish never knew about the settlement and it was not plundered. So it remains as a relatively intact cultural site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The first 2 photos show panoramic views of the upper part of the settlement. The ruins contain about 200 stone structures for housing, sanctuaries, parks and temples. The next 2 photos show the steepness of its slopes on all sides, with many terraces for agriculture. It is protected on 3 sides by the Urubamba River, with steep slopes up to 450 m in height. The 5th shows a dare-evil “bo-kia-si” worker at the edge of the terrace removing weeds.

The next 3 photos show details of the buildings and then a family group photo. We were there in 2009. Machu Picchu is accessible only by train from Cusco. There is no road link from the site to any other place.
