2018 Autumn in Hokkaido (9) - Hell Valley in Noboribetsu
In the morning we drove from Obihiro westwards to Noboribetsu, famous as a hot spring resort. "Hell Valley" is a valley with hot steam vents, sulfurous streams etc. There is a huge sulfurous pond with water temperature around 50 degrees. A river flows out of this pond into the woods. At a certain section of the river the water is warm enough as a natural foot spa. People gather along the short stretch to have foot spa.
The Hell Valley is guarded by the Hell Emperor, with his devilish lieutenants scattered all over town, all for tourism of course.
2018 Autumn in Hokkaido (10) - Mt Usu - Lake Toya
From Noboribetsu we went north-west to the Mt Usu region. First had a photo stop at Cape Chikiyu, fronting the Pacific Ocean and famous for watching sun rise.
Mt Usu and Lake Toya are located in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. We took a ropeway up to the summit station and stayed for nearly 2 hours. Mt Usu is an active volcano last erupted in 2001. The 5th photo shows the location of the last eruption. Lake Toya is a lake formed by the caldera. The last 2 photos show the lake at ground level and a recreational area called Lake Side Farm with famous ice cream.
2018 Autumn in Hokkaido (11) - Niseko, Shinsennuma
Today in Niseko, a famous ski resort. Room rates exceptionally low in autumn. First photo shows the cute nostalgic display at the reception area. Visited the Shinsennuma Marsh Park. Walked 2 hours with raincoats on in intermittent light drizzle to appreciate the wetland ecology. Ponds, 2 lakes, grassland, shrubs but this pine tree in the 5th photo is majestically huge. And even the creepers compete for autumn colours, 6th photo.
Later in the day we were at the town of Makkari to view Mt Yotei, the famous Mt Fuji lookalike. There are several places here where the locals collect natural spring water from Mt Yotei, last photo.
2018 Autumn in Hokkaido (12) - Otaru
From Niseko we went north to the port city of Otaru. On the way visited the Nikka Brewery for whisky tasting. In Otaru loitered along the touristic Sakaimachi Street next to the old canal. Shown the brewery, canal, an old painter, Sakaimachi Street, Halloween decoration and small music boxes sold in the famous "Music Box" shop.
Autumn in Hokkaido (13) - Sapporo
Today from Otaru back to Sapporo, went to the Sapporo University campus to admire the Japanese ginkyo trees in autumn colours . Found some golden fruits among the yellow leaves. Another tree, not a ginkgo, is on fire and every tourist is shooting.
Afternoon - last minute shopping. That is money laundering, no report available.
2018 Autumn in Hokkaido (14 - completion) - Reflection
Our tour to Hokkaido is ended. Today, 21th October, most members are going home. We two are going to Kyoto to continue exploring Japan. That is another story.
On reflection one has to admire Japan and the Japanese for the cleanliness, orderliness, civic-mindedness to enjoy the expensiveness of touring Japan. We tried the Japanese hot spring bath for the first time: the onsen. You soak in a common pool with other fully naked people. Men and women in separate pools of course. Shown the bathing/scrubbing area beside the pool, 1st photo.
Most of the toilets we encountered are of the high tech type with an elaborate control panel, 2nd photo. However in a toilet at the Sapporo University we went to yesterday, we just could not locate the most important "button" to press: to flush. All 3 of us who used the toilet had the same problem.
We went around in 3 rented Toyota, 3rd photo, with 5 or 6 rotating drivers. I, no driver, I, only kepochi reporter.
Many thanks to our leader Rachel, our drivers and every member for making this trip enjoyable. Special mention goes to the "Hot 4" who so often "exhibited" their hot bodies in 5 to 6 degree environment.
And to the readers, thank you for your virtual company. A few more autumn scenes to conclude the series.
