中国山西的悬空寺 ( re-post ) The Hanging Temple in Shanxi, China

The Hanging Temple in Shanxi, China*

The famous Hanging Temple is located in the city of Datong in Shanxi province. It was first built in 491 AD, on a cliff face 90 m above the river bed. Due to the siltation of the canyon, it is now only 60 m above the river bed. We made our visit in 2013.

The existing buildings are dated to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, or 2 to 5 hundred years old. The narrow buildings are supported by cantilever wooden beams with two-thirds of one end embedded into the rock. Those slender wooden poles that look like pillars (4th photo) are actually just cosmetic decorations, not structural members.

Although it is first built as a Buddhist temple, both Buddhist and Taoist halls, about 40 in numbers, have coexisted for centuries, in typical Chinese tradition.
