*WS09 ( re-post ) - The Pyramid of El Castillo, near Merida, Mexico*
We were in Mexico in 2013. This El Castillo is a pyramid within an archeological site called Chichen Itza built by the Mayan people around 600 to 1200 AD.
The pyramid is 24 m high, dedicated to the god of a certain bird. Its height and striking geometry dominates the site. But the most amazing thing is a clap of hands in front of the staircase of the pyramid will be followed by an echo that resembles the chirp of the bird which is being worshipped. We proved it ourselves by clapping repeatedly. Amazing.
In a worldwide internet poll in 2007 the pyramid was voted as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. The archeological site is of course already a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The next 2 photos shows ruins of temple buildings nearby.
The site also boosts having the biggest ball court in the ancient world, 130 m long. The carving on the platform implies that members of the losing team could be punished by execution. Amazing too.
