WS61 - Going up Mount Usu (有珠山) in Hokkaido, Japan*
Shikotsu-Toya National Park is a national park in western Hokkaido. Mount Usu is an active volcano located within the national park, last erupted in 2000. There is this Usuzan Ropeway which takes visitors to viewing platform near the peak. We were here for a full morning in 2018.
The 1st photo shows the small park next to the Usuzan Ropeway base station. The mountain in the photo is Showa Shinzan, a mountain which rose up from the flat wheat field after Mount Usu erupted in 1944. It rose to 402 m within 2 years. Simply amazing.
The 2nd photo shows the scenery at the lower part of Mount Usu. The other photos are taken at the top station level where we went hiking for 1+ hours. The 5th photo shows the old volcano crater and the 6th shows Lake Toyo, a caldera lake.
