*WS 71: touring the touristic Arashiyama (嵐山) district in Kyoto, Japan*
Arashiyama is a pleasant touristy district in western Kyoto with plenty to offer: Buddhist temple, Shinto shrine, hill villa, bamboo glove, memorial, etc. We spent a full day here in 2018.
The 1st 2 photos show the old Buddhist Tenyuji Temple dated to 1339. It is the 1st among 5 great Zen temples of the same sect, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The next 2 photo show the world famous bamboo grove, a 200 m long road jammed with tourists. The next 4 photos show in sequence: the Nonomiya shrine popular with women praying for marriage and safe child delivery, the Adashino Nenbutsuji shrine with over 1,200 stone statues each representing a soul, the villa of actor Okochi Denjiro with its vast Japanese garden and the Premier Zhou Eng Lai Memorial. Zhou was the 1st Prime Minister of the People's Republic of China who visited Arashiyama in 1917.
