*WS 146 -- The island resort of Trakai, Lithuania*
Trakai is a small historic city and lake resort in Lithuania, 28 km west of the capital Vilnius. It is a town built on water, with over 200 lakes. We made a day trip here from Vilnius in 2011 on a free-n-easy schedule.
It is a delightful town with colourfully painted cottage houses of the Karaim people, a Turkic-speaking ethnic group. And wooden statues of folklore dotting the streets. The 4th photo is a wooden synagogue of the Karaims over 200 years old.
The main attraction is of course the Trakai Island Castle completed around 1409, fell into disrepair in the 18th century. Restoration started after WW2 and fully completed in 1961, retaining the 15th century style. The last photo shows the inner courtyard of the palace and the wooden stair galleries.
