*WS 167 – The City of Design – Kaunas, Lithuania*
Kaunas is the 2nd largest city in Lithuania, with a city population of 320,000. It is famous for its cultural and academic life, and Art Deco buildings and furniture. It is the first city in Central and Eastern Europe to be designated as a UNESCO City of Design, in 2015.
We had a free-n-easy day in Kaunas in 2011. The 1st 4 photos show the Town Hall Square with a tree in the foreground “decorated” by banners advertising a coming event and the House of Thunder, the oldest and most original secular Gothic building, completed in 1440. Next the very uniquely designed Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and the Kaunas Castle.
This small city has 40 museums and galleries. We visited 2 small niche museums: the Museum of Devils and the Town Hall Ceramic Museum. Shown a pair of Devils, 5th photo, taken at the entrance. No photography is allowed inside the museum which shows how devils are portrayed in many parts of the World. And 2 of the many unusual exhibits in the Ceramic Museum. And 3 statues dotting the streets.
