*WS 115: follow the Sound of Music filming location tour in Salzburg, Austria*
Salzburg is a town in Austria, about 300 km west of Vienna, the capital. Salzburg was made famous by the 1965 hit movie “The Sound of Music” which won 5 Oscars. Salzburg provided the backdrop for most of the location filming. A “Sound of Music” tour has become mandatory for a visitor to Salzburg. We joined one, of course, in 2015.
The 1st stop was outside the Leopoldskron Palace, where the terrace was filmed as belonging to the residence of Captain von Trapp. The Palace was built in 1736 but has become a hotel. The 2nd photo shows the clock tower of the Nonnberg Convent where Maria lived. The 3rd is the gazebo at the Hellbrunn Palace. Maria and the Captain sang the song “Something Good” while dancing inside the gazebo.
The 4th photo shows the Salzburg Lake District which was featured in several outdoor scenes, with a young tourist dressed for the occasion. The 6th shows the Horse Fountain in busy Residenz Square in the old city. Maria and the children were splashing the water while singing the song “I have confidence in me”. At 14 m, the fountain is the largest Baroque fountain located outside of Italy.
The 7th photo shows the Mondsee Abbey where Maria and the Captain were married. The 8th shows the Mirabell Gardens where Maria and the children had some wonderful time singing “Do Re Mi” together. The 9th shows one of the 24 dwarfs at the Dwarf Gnome Park adjacent to the Mirabell Gardens. The von Trapp children patted the head of one of the dwarfs while singing the song of “Do Re Mi”.
Many of us are fascinated by the puppet show in the movie. These stringed puppets are called marionettes. There is a Marionettes Museum in the Hohensalzburg Castle to showcase these puppets. Last photo.
