*WS 104 - Experience the "North to Alaska" gold rush journey from Skagway, USA*
Skagway is a small town in south-east Alaska, population around 1,200, and a port of call for most Alaska cruise ships. It was the frontier town during the short but mad gold rush days from 1896 to 1900. Prospectors came here to take the 800 km trip through the mountains to the gold fields in the Yukon territory in Canada. The 1960 hit movie "North to Alaska" is the gold rush story happening here and filmed here.
We were here in 2019 and took a half day coach tour up north, along the White Pass route, up to the boundary of Yukon and back, just like the gold rush prospectors did in their initial journey, except we were on a coach while they mostly walked.
The 1st 2 photos show the town of Skagway. Other photos show scenes on the journey. It was snowing very lightly at the place called "Torment Valley", 3rd photo, which is in British Columbia, or BC, Canada. It was already early summer but frozen snow was on the ground and in the river. The lake in the 5th photo is Late Tutshi. Most mountain peaks were snow-capped and rugged. The signboard in the last photo is located at the boundary between BC and Yukon, both provinces of Canada.
