2017 Roaming in Spain (8) - Cordoba
Cordoba - Mezquita or Mosque-Cathedral - A mosque was built at this location in 787 replacing an old Church. The mosque was converted into a church when the Christians defeated the Muslims in 1236. Full modification work took several hundreds of years. The Mezquita is famed for its "forest" of columns topped with Islamic-style red and white striped arches. There are some 856 columns. Shown also the beautiful transept above the church area, and the main altarpiece.
Cordoba - street scene - an abandoned Catholic church dating to the 13th century, a famous villa, orange trees along the sides of a street (very common) and a narrow street nicknamed "Street of Flowers".
2017 Roaming in Spain (9) - Malaga
Malaga - Costa del Sol - Costa del Sol or "Coast of the Sun" is a coastal stretch in southern Spain, where the town of Malaga is located. This part of the Mediterranean coast is a world renowned tourist destination. We stayed at a resort condo for a week, using it as a base to visit other towns in southern Spain. There are more sunbathers than swimmers at the resort.
Malaga - Picasso Museum - one of the world’s most famous artists, Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga in 1881. A museum was open in 1953 to display his paintings. The core collection is made up of 230 works donated by him and his family. No photography is allowed inside. Photos here are shots on posters on sale.
Malaga -Malaga Cathedral - it was built between 1528 and 1782. A really huge structure in the Gòthic style. The north tower is 84 m high though the south tower remains unfinished. Shown the facade and the very elegant main altar.
2017 Roaming in Spain (10) - Granada
Granada - street scene - Granada is a small city with some 240,000 people. Cleaner streets with beautiful buildings of a variety of designs.
Granada - Granada Cathedral - in any European city, the most impressive building is inevitably the cathedral or a church. No exception for Granada. The cathedral was completed in 1561. The external facade is Renaissance while the interior is Baroque, best represented by the design of the main altar.
2017 Roaming in Spain (11) - Seville
Seville - Plaza de Espana - Seville is the largest city in southern Spain with a population of 700, 000. In 1929 the Ibero-American World Fair Expo was held in Seville. During the Expo a structure was built to represent each of the nations and Plaza de Espana was built for Spain. The layout represents a Moorish paradise. Two long arcades spread out towards the towers. Along the arcade are 48 decorated alcoves representing the 48 provinces.
Seville - Spanish architectural style - Mudejar – an architectural and decoration style popular in the 12th to 16th centuries in the Iberian Peninsula, strongly influenced by Moorish elements. It is characterised by the use of brick as the main building material combined with plasterwork, ceramic tiles, wood carving, ornamental metals, etc in elaborate fashion. Last 3 photos are examples of such buildings built for the 1929 Expo.
2017 Roaming in Spain (12) - Seville
Seville - Seville Cathedral - completed in 1528, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. At 100 m by 135 m, it is the largest Gòthic church building in the World and 3rd largest church in the World. Shown a forest of spires typical of Gòthic structures and one of the 15 main doors on its 4 facades. We did not go inside the main church which we visited more than 10 years ago.
Seville - the Alcázar - it is a royal palace in Seville, originally developed by Moorish Muslim caliphs in the 12th century and expanded by the Christian kings in the mid-14th century onwards maintaining the same architecture. The palace is the most outstanding example of Mudéjar architecture. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
2017 Roaming in Spain (13) - Gibraltar
Gibraltar - Gibraltar is a UK overseas territory at the south western tip of the Iberian Peninsula, guarding the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. We made a day trip there from Malaga, which is 140 km away. The area is only 6.7 sq km. Yet it has an airport with the runway at the fringe of the city centre. A main street cuts across the runway. The street is closed to traffic when the runway is in use. Shot of the runway was taken when our bus was crossing the runway.
The Rock of Gibraltar is the major landmark here. The King Fahd Mosque, completed in 1997, was funded by Saudi Arabia. To spread extremist Wahhabi Islam? The Rock's highest point stands at 426 m. Mini buses could access to about three quarter height, offering panoramic view of the city. There is a limestone cave open for viewing. It is also home to some 250 well fed Barbary Marcaque.
At the city centre, business is concentrated along the Main Street. The red telephone booths, a landmark of London, remind tourists they are in a UK territory.
2017 Roaming in Spain (14) - Malaga
Malaga - this is the last day of our Spain tour. Roamed around the city centre to admire some pleasing street decorations and visited a small niche museum on glass and crystals. A wonderful collection of different types of glassware and crystals, including a dozen big stained glass pieces said to be dated to the 19th century. The owner himself acted as our tour guide. Unfortunately we the amateurs probably could understand only 20% of what he said about the different processes of making different types of glasses and crystals. Also had a rare group photo here, assist provided by the museum owner.
Malaga - Factory Outlet - made a special trip to the outlet located off the city centre, greatly anticipated by the 2 ladies. But the outlet is rather small, to the disappointment of the ladies and the relief of the gentlemen. Not worth the taxi fare and trouble.
2017 Roaming in Spain (15) - Food in Spain and Conclusion
Paella - most of us would think that the signature dish for Spain is paella, but to the Spanish it is more of a local dish from the Valencia region. But it is a dish for the tourists. It is essentially sticky rice cooked with meat or seafood or other combination. And with olive oil. The types of rice used is critical, mostly the big grain Bomba or Seria. 1st photo
Jemon Iberico - it is the signature pork in Spain and Portugal. It is a type of cured ham from the black Iberian pigs, or cross-bred pigs with at least 50% Iberian origins. Quite a sight with all the pork legs hung to cure on the walls and ceilings in restaurants. Taste: typically salty as in all cured meat. 2nd photo.
Tapas – tapas originally means an appetizer or snack, but could be combined together to provide a main meal. Like the Hong Kong timsum or the “four seasons” in a Chinese cuisine. It is our favourites. It could include many items, hot and cold, ranging from mini sandwich, meatballs, grilled tomatoes or mushrooms, seafood, etc, etc. A tapas bar might provide 30 to 50 types of snack, and might offer 5 for 10 or 12 Euro. 3rd photo.
Garlic prawn – one of the best dishes we have tasted here is the simple garlic prawns. We first tried it at our 1st stop in Barcelona and have ordered it many times later, at different places. Great taste most of the times. 4th photo.
Home cooked dinners – we stayed in a fully equipped resort condo in Malaga for a week so we have home cooked dinner a few times. Mostly seafood supplemented with roast pork or beef from the super-market. 5th and 6th photo. That miserable bean sprout, 200 gm, cost us about 4 Euro or RM 20, certainly the most expensive bean sprouts ever bought, the consequence of not checking the price first.
Conclusion – the tour is ended, so is the story. Thanks for reading and accompanying us on the tour.
General note: the Spanish are most friendly and helpful. Not difficult to go free-n-easy in Spain.
And what about the participants? Well, we are all seniors. Seniors over 65 get good discount in entrance tickets to many tourist sights, some even free. KS is the Navigator, CL the Director, I am the Commentator and Maria the Silencer.
We argued all the time, shouted at each other even. But the joy of sharing and companionship override all disagreement and argument. It was not the 1st time we travelled together and it won’t be our last too, for sure. Thanks, my travel buddies.
Further note in 2020: the same Gang of 4 went to Canada and the USA for a month in 2019.
