Roaming in Spain 2017 - Part. 1 - 6

2017 Roaming in Spain (1) - Prelude

In late October 2017 four of us went to Spain on for a free-n-easy tour. This is the 1st daily tour report.

Barcelona - Legacy of Gaudi (1) -  the Casa Batllo -  a mansion renovated by Gaudi. based on the theme of a dragon sprawling on top of the building. Coloured tiles, stained glasses, curves and forms beyond imagination. Shown part of roofline and wall by the internal staircase. Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) is the greatest Spanish architect/builder in modern times.

Barcelona - Legacy of Gaudi (2) - Cathedral Sagrada Familia - construction started in 1881, work still in progress but already a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Awesome and extremely fascinating structures.

2017 Roaming in Spain (2) - Barcelona

Barcelona - Legacy of  Gaudi (3) - Parc  Gueli - a public park designed in typical Gaudi fashion: full of curves, all forms of paraboloid, hyperboloid, and shapes beyond recognition.

Barcelona - La Rambla - this is a 1.2 km main boulevard in the city centre, a place to see and to be seen. Two months ago a terrorist drove a car onto this pedestrian-only street and killed 13 people and injured over a 100. Crowded today, fear factor absent.

Barcelona - Barcelona Cathedral - construction started in 1298, main building functionally completed in 1460, but the Gothic facade was completed only in 1889. Tastefully decorated. The church has 29 elegant chapels.

2017 Roaming in Spain (3) - Barcelona

Barcelona - Gothic Quarter - the centre of the old city. A labyrinth of narrow streets, opening out into squares. Most of the Gothic buildings date to 19th and 20th centuries. Shown a bridge over a lane to link two buildings, and an internal section of the City Hall.

Barcelona - Plaza Real - the main square in the Gothic Quarter, dotted with palm trees and fountains. A well-known popular meeting place, with a large number of restaurants, cafes and bars. We had a coffee break too to rest our feet.

2017 Roaming in Spain (4) - Barcelona

Barcelona - politics - ‌Spain is made up of 17 regions. Barcelona is the capital of the region of Catalonia. In recent weeks, there was this call of independence by the Catalans. The locals came out to have massive demonstrations and hanged the Catalonia flag on the statue of Ramon Berenguer III, Count of Barcelona in the 12th century, who greatly expanded the boundaries of the Catalan territory. The minority royalists countered by hanging the national flag on their bodies.

High Speed train in Spain - the high speed rail network in Spain totals 3,240 km, the 2nd longest in the World after China. Operational since 1992 with speed up to 310 kmph.  We took such a train from Barcelona to Madrid: 621 km, time: 3 hours 10 minutes, cost: 50 Euro or RM 250 (non-peak price, peak hour cost much more). No free wifi on train, a big let-down. At the Barcelona train station, entry to WC costs 1 Euro (RM 5) each time

2017 Roaming in Spain (5A) - Madrid

Madrid - Plaza Mayor - the beautiful main square is surrounded by historical buildings. Completed in 1620, it has hosted many historic events. The bronze statue is that of King Felipe III from 1616.

Madrid - Basilica of St. Francis the Great -  constructed in 1760 on the same spot where Saint Francis himself founded a Franciscan monastery in 1217. The 33 m wide dome is the 4th largest in the world, with fantastic frescos. This place is famous for its gallery of Christian art.

2017 Roaming in Spain (5B) - Madrid

Madrid - Cathedral Santa Maria de la Almudena - the cathedral was constructed between 1879 and 1993, in Neo-Romanseque and Gòthic styles. A massive but modern church building, relatively unadorned. It has a huge crypt, 2nd photo.

Madrid -  Mercado de San Miguel -  the city’s oldest and most beautiful market. The market, completed in 1916, is the last remaining steel market hall, now covered with glass panels. See the reflection on the glass walls and a showcase of fruits.

2017 Roaming in Spain (6) - Madrid

Madrid - street scenes - many monuments and parks. The most famous statue in Madrid is not a VIP but a 4-m tall bear in Puerta del Sol. In the Middle Ages,  Madrid is known as "Ursaria" or "Land of the Bears". In Europe, Graffiti is an accepted form of "culture". This particular one on the roller shutter of a shop is delightful. The real person passing by has become part of the graffiti. The next one is also a graffiti, the "living graffiti" created by Patrick Blanc. It is a 25 m wall covered with mosses, vines and trees, along the main road of Calle de Alfonso XII.

Madrid - Museo Nacional del Prado - This national museum is the nation's finest art museum. A great collection of European art from 12th to 19th century. We spent about 2+ hours inside. At that time there was a special exhibition by the contemporary Chinese artist Cai Guo Qiang who uses explosives to create paintings. Has the World gone so explosive?
